Frozen mixed berries recalled across Australia over 'Hepatitis A link'
One-kilogram bags of Nanna's frozen mixed berries are being pulled off supermarket shelves across Australia because of potential Hepatitis A contamination.
People who have bought the berries are advised not to eat them, a statement from Victorian packing company Patties Foods said.
The fruit can be returned to the place of purchase for a "full cash refund", the company added.
Stores are being advised and there will be advertisements in national newspapers on Monday.
The berries came from China and Chile and were packed at Patties Foods, which is based at Bairnsdale.
The company said the "voluntary recall" was in the interests of consumer safety and that the "health and wellbeing of consumers is paramount".
It said the "full national " recall was a precautionary measure following advice from the Victorian Health Department of potential Hepatitis A contamination.
Concerned consumers can call the company on 1800 650 069.
No other Nanna's or Patties Foods products are affected by the recall.
The frozen mixed berries are sold mainly in Woolworths, Coles and IGA supermarkets.
Hepatitis A is spread when traces of faecal matter containing the virus contaminate hands, objects, water or food.
Berries the 'only link' between cases of Hepatitis A
Dr Rosemary Lester, Victoria's chief health officer, said frozen berries had been implicated in past outbreaks of Hepatitis A.
"Hepatitis A virus infection is uncommon and normally associated with travel to countries affected by endemic Hepatitis A," she said.
"The only common link between the cases is consumption of this product. There is no overseas travel or common restaurant exposure.
"Sampling of the product will be undertaken to identify the virus but it is difficult to find Hepatitis A virus, even in a contaminated batch."
Dr Finn Romanes, from the Victorian Health Department, said they were asking people who had eaten this product in the past 50 days to look out for symptoms of the disease.
"Symptoms typically begin with fever, loss of appetite and nausea, and can progress to jaundice, which is dark urine, yellowing of the eyes," he said.
"In a very small number of cases there can be death associated with Hepatitis A infection.
"If you develop any symptoms after consuming these berries, please contact your GP."
The berries have a two-year shelf life and any product purchased from October 2014 onwards should be thrown out.
"The company's working with us to recall any product that's on the shelves of this line at all," Dr Romanes said.
"We're really asking people to be vigilant for symptoms for quite a long period because it can take up to a month or 50 days to develop symptoms."
Hospital listeria threat in mousse supplied to hospitals
In a separate recall a number of hospitals have been told to throw out a chocolate mousse product, found in routine tests, to contain listeria.
The mousse, which had a use-by date of February 14, 2015, was supplied to the Austin Hospital, St Vincent's Private, St Vincent's Mercy, Brunswick Private, the Royal Children's Hospital, Ballarat Health Services, Caulfield Hospital, Sandringham Hospital, Frankston Hospital and Rosebud Hospital.
No cases have been reported, but symptoms can take up to 70 days to appear.
Most healthy people are not affected by listeria or show only minor symptoms.
"The issue with listeria is that it's it's an issue for people with compromised immune systems because they can become more unwell," Dr Romanes said.
"As many people may know, some ready-to-eat foods and other foods that can contain listeria are dangerous for pregnant women their unborn babies and the elderly."
The hospitals are notifying patients who may have consumed the mousse between January 29 and February 10.
"Hospitals are taking action to contact people and there hasn't been anyone with illness identified so far," Dr Romanes said.

Canada foils Valentine's Day 'shooting-spree plot'
Canadian police said they had foiled a plot by two suspects who were planning on going to a mall and killing as many people as they could before committing suicide on Valentine's Day in Halifax.
The suspects were on a chat stream and were apparently obsessed with death and had many photos of mass killings, a police official said on Friday.
The official said one of the two suspects, a 23-year-old American woman from Geneva, Illinois, was arrested at Halifax's airport and confessed to the plot.
She allegedly prewrote a number of pronouncements to be tweeted after her death.
Police said the suspects had access to firearms, but did not elaborate.
The official said the 19-year-old male shot himself to death after police were tipped off about the plot and they surrounded his home.
Police saw two people leave the house who they determined were his parents and pulled them over on a traffic check.
They then called the suspect. As the man told police that he didn't have any guns and he was on his way out of the house he shot himself, the official said.
The official spoke anonymously because they were not authorised to speak publicly.
Police earlier said two other Nova Scotia men, ages 20 and 17, were also involved, although investigators are still trying to determine what their roles were.
The police official said the 17-year-old male was wanted for threatening to shoot up a high school and had an outstanding warrant.
"Had they been able to carry out their intentions the possibility for a large loss of life was definitely there," Nova Scotia Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commanding Officer Brian Brennan said earlier on Friday.
"We believe we have apprehended all known individuals in this matter and have eliminated the threat. We are not seeking any further suspects at this time in relation to this investigation."
Canadian Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney applauded the work of police in Canada and Geneva, Illinois and well as border officials in a statement.
The Geneva police department said in a statement they were contacted by Canadian police and had no contact with the American woman before her arrest.
Canadian Justice Minister Peter MacKay has scheduled a news conference for Saturday morning.

New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 98 runs in World Cup opener – as it happened
Simon Burnton (first innings) andVithushan Ehantharajah (second innings)
- WICKET! Herath c Milne b Anderson 13 (Sri Lanka 233 all out)
- WICKET! Malinga c Ronchi b Southee 0 (Sri Lanla 217-9)
- WICKET! Mathews c Vettori b Southee 46 (Sri Lanka 216-8)
- WICKET! Kulasekara c Elliot b Anderson 10 (Sri Lanka 196-7)
- WICKET! Mendis c Ronchi b Milne 4 (Sri Lanka 168-6)
- WICKET! Karunaratne b Milne 14 (Sri Lanka 163-5)
- WICKET! Sangakkara LBW Boult (39)
Well, as close to the perfect game from New Zealand. They probably would have preferred one of their set batsmen to go on and notch a three figure score, but they’ll be satisfied that they start the World Cup with a professional performance.
Sri Lanka have issues, not least in the bowling department, where Malinga looks a pale shadow of his former self. Have Sri Lanka made an error in keeping him on this tour? He’ll no doubt bowl himself into form - there are more than enough games - but 10 overs, 0 for 84, is a huge worry.
Still, no need for total doom and gloom just yet. Thanks for joining me - I’m off to feel real again.

'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Is Abusive Gender Roles Disguised As Faux-Feminism
Here comes Valentine’s Day, and with it the cinematic arrival of one of the most anticipated screen adaptations of the year. 50 Shades of Grey, adapted from the novel of the same name, brings us a decidedly strict definition of “be mine.” The novel started off as erotic fan fiction based on the Twilightseries and evolved into an original story that gained a massive audience. E.L. James’ best seller is adapted here by director Sam Taylor-Johnson, usingKelly Marcel’s screenplay.
Taylor-Johnson is an artist with one other feature film, the impressive Nowhere Boy, about John Lennon’s early life. Marcel (working with Sue Smith) wrote a fantastic script for Saving Mr. Banks, full of adult emotion and characters who win and break your heart. With 50 Shades of Grey, Marcel was smart to discard a lot from the book, but she still had to rely on the source material, and the studio wanted a direct adaptation. So, as you read my review, keep in mind everyone involved worked with what they had and they’re talented people whose other work greatly impresses me.
Opening weekend is going to be big, as we’ve known for some time now. Just how big remains to be seen. Its Thursday take was nearly $9 million, a big sum and a sign that the weekend and four-day totals will be impressive. You can read Scott Mendelson’s full report on the early numbers here, and he offers a great assessment of the different possible scenarios and comparisons.
Current estimates are between $60-65 million in North America alone for the weekend. There’s a chance it might go higher, since buzz is building and many uncertain folks will end up turning out. Advance ticket sales are overwhelmingly dominated by female viewers, and there will likewise be additional female viewers who show up on opening weekend with other female friends or with significant others, making the overall turnout probably 65-70% female this weekend.
It’s Valentines Day weekend, too, And it’s a long weekend, remember, since Monday is a federal holiday. So I won’t be surprised, then, if the final figures come in closer to the $70 million range domestically for Friday through Sunday, and it’s likely to top that number over the entire four-day period. With foreign release coming over the same four days, it’ll more than recoup its $40 million budget this weekend, and likely pay off its marketing bill by the end of the second weekend, if not mid-week, depending on how well it plays overseas (remember the overly simplistic but useful generalization is, the studio gets about half of the box office from ticket sales).
What kind of legs it develops depends largely on word of mouth, and it’s probably fair to say at least a sizable portion of fans of the novel will enthusiastically recommend the film and even go back for a second viewing. So I think it has fairly good odds of having a strong run overall. That said, I also think the bad reviews plus the likely negative word of mouth it’ll get from a lot of non-fans, and from some fans who don’t like the changes from the book (or who are bothered by the simple fact their own imagination isn’t adequately represented on screen), will be a factor that limits just how high it can climb up the box office ladder. And there’s a lot of reason for that bad word of mouth, which I’ll get to in a moment.
All told, then, I’d say we’re probably looking at a final box office tally in the neighborhood of perhaps $150-180 million domestically, and about $300 million worldwide, on the modest end of predictions. It might perform higher domestically and in certain overseas markets, and manage a domestic tally in the $200 million range and $350-400 million globally, if it holds well and isn’t too front loaded on Thursday and Friday.
But an R-rated movie about bondage and kinky sex that’s getting bad reviews and opposition from many women’s organizations faces a lot of obstacles if it wants to climb beyond those numbers. Plus, it’s just not good enough to deserve higher returns, since it frankly doesn’t deserve the strong business it’s already destined to generate.
Why not? Read on, because there is oh so much to say about the “why…”
For a film that’s supposed to be about the collision between deep emotional need and raw human sexuality, it is cold and clinical to the point of feeling sterile in everything from aesthetics to characterization.
Dakota Johnson as Anastasia delivers a good enough performance (albeit with way too much lip-biting in almost every scene) and clearly is doing her best to transcend the low-rent story she’s trapped in, but it’s just not a compelling enough character and she’s ultimately stifled by the severe limitations of the material. Jamie Dornan has even less to work with in terms of character and cringe-worthy dialogue, and I was constantly reminded of how vastly better a performance he’s capable of when give decent material (such as The Fall). Here, he ends up lifeless and off-putting — to the point it’s just no fun and not interesting to watch. They lack chemistry together, and two primary concepts we needed to accept don’t work at all and thus instantly undermine everything in the picture — namely, that she’s a plain-looking average person most people don’t notice, and that he’s so absurdly handsome and intimidating everyone feels immediately awed by his presence.
But what really makes 50 Shades of Grey fail, even worse than lacking romantic/sexual heat and honest portrayals of human characters, are its terrible themes.
One poster (which you can see at the start of this review) says “Lose Control,” as if somehow what’s been lacking in cinematic female characterizations is turning over control to male characters. Women submitting to men, women’s narratives as subservient to men’s narratives — even male supporting characters — isn’t new, nor is it a radical concept to portray women as sex objects for men. The film seems to think that noting women can experience sexual gratification sometimes while playing typical subservient roles to male gratification is some kind of empowering message.
