What Martin Luther King Jr. Was Like as a Child

Remembering his youth on what would have been his birthday

First, he was named Michael. Though Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be observed in the United States on Jan. 19 this year, it was on Jan. 15, 1929, thatMichael Luther King, Jr., was born. As TIME recounted in a 1957 profile of the Civil
Martin Luther King Jr
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaking before crowd of 25,000 on March 25, 1965 in Montgomery, Ala.Rights leader, he was six when his father — a pastor in Atlanta — decided that the two should switch out their first names for Martin, in honor of Martin Luther, the priest who brought about the Protestant Reformation. His childhood home (a two-story yellow brick house, according to TIME’s profile) was a religious one, where the younger Martin would recite from the Bible at dinnertime.
The early article provides a rare glimpse at how the leader was discussed before he was known throughout the world.
And, even if he didn’t always want to be a minister, it’s clear that his childhood shaped the rest of his life
From his earliest memory Martin King has had a strong aversion to violence in all its forms. The school bully walloped him; Martin did not fight back. His younger brother flailed away at him; Martin stood and took it. A white woman in a store slapped him, crying, “You’re the [n—-r] who stepped on my foot.” Martin said nothing. Cowardice? If so, it would come as a surprise to Montgomery, where Martin Luther Kinghas unflinchingly faced the possibility of violent death for months.
The shabby, overcrowded Negro schools inAtlanta were no match for the keen, probing (“I like to get in over my head, then bother people with questions”) mind of Martin King; he leapfrogged through high school in two years, was ready at 15 for Atlanta‘s Morehouse College, one of the South’s Negro colleges. At Morehouse, King worked with the city’s Intercollegiate Council, an integrated group, and learned a valuable lesson. “I was ready to resent all the white race,” he says. “As I got to see more of white people, my resentment was softened, and a spirit of cooperation took its place. But I never felt like a spectator in the racial problem. I wanted to be involved in the very heart of it.”
As a kid, in the classic tradition of kids, Martin wanted to be a fireman. Then, hoping to treat man’s physical ills, he planned to become a doctor. Becoming more deeply engrossed in the problems of his race, he turned his hopes to the law because “I could see the part I could play in breaking down the legal barriers to Negroes.” At Morehouse, he came to final resolution. “I had been brought up in the church and knew about religion,” says King, “but I wondered whether it could serve as a vehicle to modern thinking. I wondered whether religion, with its emotionalism in Negro churches, could be intellectually respectable as well as emotionally satisfying.” He decided it could—and that he would become a minister.

11 Things About Foxcatcher That The Film Covered Up

The true story behind the Hollywood film.
wikipedia
wikipedia
(Spoilers from the start and throughout)
Foxcatcher has opened in cinemas to a rapture of critical acclaim. The story is centred around John DuPont and his eccentric involvement in funding Olympic wrestlers Mark Schultz and Dave Schultz. Despite this being a true story, with several historically accurate scenes, the director Bennet Miller and his team have taken several liberties with the truth. The story, written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman, is very much a work of fiction that incorporates aspects of the real John du Pont / Dave Schultz controversy.
Despite problems with the story, it is still very much a satisfying film. Critics have praised the acting performances of Steve Carrell, Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo. It’s an emotionally engrossing film that will please fans who enjoy highbrow movies.
From a more sports orientated point of view, this film is also very satisfying. The wrestling scenes are very realistic and get over the intensity of the athletic combat. This film deserves to be recognised as one of the top efforts in the sport film genre. However, it does fail to get over the actual intensity of a wrestling training camp. The physical intensity and training schedules of Olympic wrestlers are full day sessions that pose gruelling challenges. Sitting around drinking whiskey isn’t really an option, especially with the careful nutrition that wrestlers observe.
But before we get into Foxcatcher’s inaccuracies, a quick note on what was accurate. John du Pont really did shoot Dave Schultz to death, and that scene was exactly how it happened.
It was a terrible incident that was largely unexplained beyond John du Pont simply losing his mind – although the judge didn’t rule that du Pont was insane. Instead, du Pont was sentenced for third degree murder and ruled mentally ill. He lived the rest of his life in a mental home and was refused parole in 2009. He died a year later and was buried in his Foxcatcher wrestling singlet.
Foxcatcher is an engrossing and tragic story, a narrative that demands further investigation into the true circumstances.

The horrific aftermath of Boko Haram massacre on Nigerian villages: Before and after satellite images lay bare destruction caused by militants in attack that killed 2,500 people

  • Infra-red satellite images show destruction of 'densely populated' towns
  • One witness says terrorists shot and killed a woman who was in labour
  • Estimated 2,500 people killed, and more than 3,700 structures were razed

  • The destruction wreaked by Islamist militants in Nigeria when they slaughtered an estimated 2,500 people including a woman while she was in labour has been revealed in shocking new satellite images.
Terror group Boko Haram outraged the world last week when they indiscriminately murdered innocent men, women and children as they attacked the towns of Baga and Doron Baga.
Now, new images obtained by Amnesty International show how the towns were devastated by the assault - with more than 3,700 structures including houses and schools completely destroyed.

n the pictures taken beforehand, the areas in red show buildings and trees in the densely packed towns in the north of the country.
But in the pictures taken after the massacre, they have been decimated and the infra-red satellite images instead reveal grey areas where the militants savagely razed the towns.
The destruction shown in these images matches the horrific stories from eyewitnesses revealing how Boko Haram militants shot hundreds of civilians in cold blood.
One witness described how the ruthless terror group were shooting indiscriminately, killing even small children and a woman who was in labour.
He added: 'Half of the baby boy is out and she died like this.'
Ibrahim Gambo, a 25-year-old truck driver, survived the relentless attack in Baga but he still doesn't know if his wife and daughter are safe.
He said: 'As we were running for our lives, we came across many corpses, both men and women, and even children.
'Some had gunshot wounds in the head and some had their legs bound and hands tied behind their backs.'
Yahaya Takakumi, a 55-year-old farmer, revealed to Nigeria's Premium Times how he managed to flee Baga with one of his wives - but does not know if his four children, his second wife or his elder brother managed to escape.
