Aaliyah’s 36th Birthday — Honoring The Amazing Artist
Aaliyah, a Grammy-nominated singer, was well on her way to taking over the music world at the mere age of 22.
However, Aaliyah’s sky high success was abruptly cut short on August 25, 2001, when she died in an airplane crash in The Bahamas, along with 8 other people.
The “Try Again” singer, who was was engaged to co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records Damon Dash at the time of her death, would have turned 36 years old on Jan. 16.
Her engagement is just one of the many professional and personal milestones that were portrayed in Lifetime’s highly controversial biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B.

As HollywoodLife.com previously reported, Aaliyah’s fans, family and friends were skeptical of the storyline — so much so that Zendaya Coleman, 18, dropped out of the role and was replaced by actress Alexandra Shipp, 23.
“Basically, I just felt that because I love her, and because I respect her so much as an artist, I don’t want to do anything that’s half or anything that’s less for her,” the actress toldHollywoodLife.com at the BET Awards on June 29, 2014.
From her reported secret relationship with singer R. Kelly to her quick ascent as a music artist, Aaliyah seemed to have it all based on the biopic, which chronicled her life just before her fatal plane crash.
Be it her innovative sound or her charismatic style, Aaliyah has undoubtedly influenced many of the top female artists in the music industry today.
“Aaliyah redefined a lot things for young girls,” said Alexandra Shipp, who has an uncanny resemblance to Aaliyah throughout the Lifetime movie.
We are thinking of Aaliyah and her family on this very difficult day.
